15,000 BYDs on New Zealand Roads: A Growing Vote of Confidence

Four years after BYD first arrived in New Zealand, more than 15,000 BYD vehicles are now on Kiwi roads.

That milestone represents more than a number. It is a sign of how quickly New Zealand drivers have embraced electric and plug-in hybrid technology – and how much confidence has been built in a brand that was virtually unknown in the New Zealand automotive market just four years ago.

Of those 15,000-plus vehicles, 9,824 are fully electric and 5,248 are plug-in hybrids, meaning thousands of Kiwi drivers have already made the switch away from conventional petrol-powered vehicles.

A growing impact on New Zealand's emissions

Every electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle replacing kilometres that would otherwise have been driven in a conventional petrol vehicle has the potential to reduce transport emissions.

According to figures modelled by BYD Auto New Zealand, the current BYD fleet on New Zealand roads is estimated to be avoiding around 14 million litres of petrol every year, equivalent to approximately 33,900 tonnes of CO₂-e.

These figures are estimates based on assumptions including an 8L/100km comparison vehicle and, for plug-in hybrids, 60% of driving being completed using electricity.

While they are modelled rather than measured figures, they provide a sense of the cumulative impact thousands of electrified vehicles can have when they are being driven every day by Kiwi families, businesses and organisations.

And that impact will continue to grow as more BYDs take to New Zealand roads.

Building trust, one vehicle at a time

When BYD launched in New Zealand in 2022, it entered a market where many customers had never heard of the brand, let alone considered owning one.

Today, more than 15,000 New Zealanders have chosen to put a BYD in their driveway, workplace or fleet.

That growing ownership base is important because confidence in a vehicle brand isn't built through advertising alone. It is built through real-world ownership – people driving the cars, sharing their experiences, returning for servicing and recommending them to friends, family and colleagues.

The BYD dealer and service network has also grown significantly alongside the number of vehicles on the road. The national network now spans 25 locations, giving owners greater access to sales and aftersales support across the country.

For us here at BYD Nelson, that growth is particularly exciting. We get to see first-hand the range of customers choosing BYD – from families making the move to their first EV, to businesses looking for more efficient fleet vehicles and drivers discovering the flexibility of BYD's Super Hybrid technology.

Quality that is proving itself on New Zealand roads

The growth of the BYD fleet is also creating something increasingly important for any vehicle brand: a growing history of cars being owned and driven in New Zealand conditions.

BYD's technology, battery systems, safety features and build quality are no longer something Kiwi customers have to take on faith. There are now thousands of vehicles being driven across the country every day.

The brand's growing model range has also helped demonstrate that electrified vehicles can suit a wide variety of lifestyles – from compact city cars and family SUVs through to the Shark 6 Super Hybrid ute.

And as the first BYDs sold in New Zealand begin to move into their next stage of ownership, another important part of the automotive market is starting to develop.

The next chapter: the used BYD market

The first BYDs sold here in 2022 and 2023 are now beginning to return from company fleets, creating a growing supply of used, New Zealand-new BYD vehicles.

BYD New Zealand is responding by introducing a Certified Pre-Owned programme, including bringing early New Zealand-new vehicles back into the network and supporting them with a BYD New Zealand warranty. The distributor also plans to import selected used BYDs from Japan.

This is an important milestone for the brand.

A healthy used-vehicle market gives customers another way into BYD ownership and helps demonstrate that these vehicles have a life beyond their first owner. As more BYDs enter the second-hand market, more New Zealand drivers will have the opportunity to experience the technology at a used-vehicle price point.

It also creates another layer of confidence for people considering a BYD today: there is an increasingly established ownership journey beyond simply buying a new vehicle.

15,000 is only the beginning

From an EV-only range in 2022 to a broad line-up of electric and Super Hybrid vehicles today, BYD has grown rapidly in New Zealand.

But perhaps the most significant part of reaching 15,000 vehicles isn't the milestone itself.

It's what those vehicles represent.

More than 15,000 individual decisions by Kiwi families, businesses and organisations to try something different. More than 15,000 vehicles contributing to the country's transition towards lower-emission transport. And an increasingly established brand, dealer network and used-vehicle market supporting those owners along the way.

At BYD Nelson, we're proud to be part of that journey.

With a growing range of BYD electric and Super Hybrid vehicles available to test drive at 150 Rutherford Street, the next 15,000 could arrive sooner than we think.
