At BYD Nelson and The Car Company, we're passionate about supporting local businesses that are doing something new, exciting and positive for our community. That's why we're thrilled to announce our partnership with Padel Centre Nelson—the region's first dedicated padel facility.
Located on Coman Drive in Richmond, near Berryfields, Padel Centre Nelson is introducing one of the world's fastest-growing sports to the Nelson Tasman region. Founded by local couple Roar and Rebecca Kristofferen, the purpose-built venue features three state-of-the-art indoor courts, member keyless access, all-weather play and professional coaching, creating an incredible facility for both newcomers and experienced players alike.
What is Padel?
If you haven't heard of padel yet, you're not alone—but chances are you soon will.
Often described as a cross between tennis and squash, padel is easy to learn, incredibly social and suitable for almost every age and fitness level. Games are typically played as doubles, with tennis-style scoring, but the walls surrounding the court are part of the game, creating exciting rallies, clever angles and plenty of laughs along the way.
The smaller court and lighter equipment mean beginners can quickly enjoy competitive rallies, while experienced players discover the strategic depth that has made padel one of the fastest-growing sports worldwide.
Whether you're looking for a fun way to stay active, catch up with friends or feed your competitive side, padel offers something for everyone.
A Fantastic New Addition to Nelson Tasman
Roar and Rebecca have created far more than just a sporting facility. Padel Centre Nelson has become a welcoming community hub where people can learn, compete and connect.
Alongside casual court bookings, the centre offers:
- Professional coaching for all skill levels
- Programs for school children
- Social competitions and regular tournaments
- Competitive events for experienced players
- A modern indoor venue that can be enjoyed year-round
Our team recently had the opportunity to jump on court and experience padel for ourselves—and it's safe to say we now understand the hype. We had an absolute blast, and several members of our team have already become regular players after quickly catching the padel bug.

Supporting local businesses has always been at the heart of what we do. Whether it's helping local families into their next vehicle, partnering with community organisations or backing exciting new ventures like Padel Centre Nelson, we believe great communities are built by people supporting one another.
We're excited to see Padel Centre Nelson continue to grow and introduce even more people to this incredible sport.
