Why BYD is different from other Chinese vehicle manufacturers that are entering the market.
When you visit BYD Nelson and see the growing range of electric and super hybrid vehicles available to New Zealand drivers, it can be easy to forget just how large BYD has become on the global automotive stage.
BYD is no longer simply a Chinese car manufacturer exporting vehicles overseas. It has become a global new energy vehicle company, with a growing presence across Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America and beyond.
And now, that global growth is extending to the way BYD gets its vehicles around the world.
BYD is building its own automotive shipping network
Recent reports suggest BYD has ordered a further 10 dedicated vehicle carriers, each capable of carrying around 9,200 vehicles.
If confirmed, the additional vessels would take BYD’s dedicated shipping fleet from eight ships to 18, with combined capacity of more than 130,000 car-equivalent units.
The reported ships would be built by China Merchants Industry, with deliveries expected between 2027 and 2029.
It is important to note that the latest 10-ship order has not yet been officially confirmed by BYD or the shipbuilder. However, BYD has already established its own fleet of vehicle carriers, with its first dedicated ship, Explorer No.1, entering service in 2024.
The strategy is straightforward: as BYD’s global vehicle sales grow, having greater control over the journey from factory to international market becomes increasingly important.
For New Zealand, that could be particularly significant.
Why shipping matters to New Zealand
New Zealand is a long way from the major vehicle manufacturing centres in Asia.
Unlike larger automotive markets, we have a relatively small volume of vehicles arriving by sea, while shipping capacity is also in high demand across the wider Asia-Pacific region.
That can create challenges when demand for new vehicles increases rapidly.
BYD New Zealand has already experienced this first-hand as demand for its electric and super hybrid vehicles has grown. In 2026, additional vehicle shipments have been secured to help meet customer demand, following periods where vehicles were built and ready to leave China but shipping capacity was constrained.
BYD New Zealand General Manager Warren Willmot says the prospect of BYD’s own vessels reaching New Zealand could be particularly positive for a market as geographically distant as ours.
The current expectation is that BYD-owned vessels could begin delivering vehicles to New Zealand from late 2027 or early 2028.
For Kiwi customers, greater control over shipping could ultimately mean a more resilient and efficient supply chain as the BYD range continues to expand.
A global brand growing at remarkable speed
The shipping investment is just one part of a much bigger story.
BYD’s global growth over the past few years has been extraordinary.
In 2025, BYD sold 4.6 million new energy vehicles globally and generated more than RMB 804 billion in revenue. Overseas sales passed one million vehicles for the first time, representing 145% year-on-year growth.
That momentum has continued into 2026.
BYD reported more than 1.8 million new energy vehicle sales in the first six months of 2026, while international sales exceeded 780,000 vehicles. The company now operates across 121 countries and regions worldwide.
In July 2026, BYD also reached another significant milestone: its 17-millionth new energy vehicle rolled off the production line, making BYD the first automotive manufacturer in the world to reach that figure.
These numbers demonstrate that BYD’s growth is not limited to one market or one type of vehicle.
The company is building a genuinely global automotive business.
More technology, more models and more choice
One of the reasons behind BYD’s growth is the company’s focus on developing its own technology.
From the Blade Battery and its electric vehicle platforms to its DM-i Super Hybrid technology, BYD develops many of the key technologies that sit at the heart of its vehicles.
That approach allows BYD to offer a broad range of new energy vehicles, rather than asking every customer to make the same transition in the same way.
Here in New Zealand, that means the BYD range can cater to very different drivers.
Whether you’re looking for your first EV, a family SUV, a long-range vehicle, a super hybrid or an electric ute, the range continues to grow.
At BYD Nelson, we’re already seeing that variety reflected in the vehicles our customers are choosing.
A shipping fleet designed with sustainability in mind
There is another interesting element to BYD’s shipping strategy.
The company’s dedicated vehicle carriers are roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessels, designed specifically to transport vehicles. The ships use LNG dual-fuel technology, while BYD has also incorporated its own Blade Battery technology into the vessels’ onboard power systems.
For a company whose stated mission is centred around new energy and reducing emissions, extending that thinking into the supply chain is an important step.
BYD has previously described its shipping strategy as a “maritime bridge” supporting its international expansion.
The company has also said that owning its own vessels can reduce shipping costs per vehicle compared with relying entirely on third-party chartered shipping.
What does this mean for BYD Nelson customers?
For us at BYD Nelson, the most exciting part of this story is what it represents for the future.
BYD is continuing to invest heavily in production, technology, global distribution and infrastructure at a time when the demand for electric and super hybrid vehicles is accelerating.
New Zealand is part of that global story.
As BYD continues to expand its model range here, and as its international supply chain becomes more established, we expect Kiwi drivers to have access to even more choice.
And while BYD’s own ships may still be a couple of years away from regularly calling on New Zealand, the direction is clear: BYD is building the scale and infrastructure needed to support its next stage of global growth.
From the factory floor, to the shipping lanes, to the showroom at 150 Rutherford Street, Nelson, BYD is continuing to build a bigger presence around the world — and we’re proud to be part of that journey here in Nelson.
